Generalization of optical fiber

Optical fiber is considered as the true essence of modern technology, offering unparalleled benefits in terms of speed, reliability, and scalability. Its generalization serves as a catalyst for change and advancement into an era where high-speed connectivity will be accessible to everyone, paving the way for a more inclusive society with a resilient infrastructure.

The generalization of optical fiber is integral to the sector’s strategy, leading to substantial investments in deploying optical fiber on large scale. The goal is to upgrade the current electronic communication network, expanding and modernizing it.

It’s noteworthy that the sector’s policy primarily focuses on democratizing access to the internet, ensuring even the most remote areas benefit from high-speed connectivity to reduce digital divides, enhance social inclusion, and stimulate economic development.

In this context, facing the growing demand for connectivity, more than 200:000 km of optical fiber have been deployed, connecting the 58 wilayas to meet the growing needs of citizens. The goal is to connect two-thirds of households to landline internet by the end of 2024, prioritizing FTTH (Fiber to the Home).

Significant progress has been observed in recent years regarding landline internet access through FTTH technology, where the number of subscribers has increased from 53.394 in 2020 to over one (01) million by the end of 2023. Algeria is among the few African and Arab countries to have reached this milestone.

Furthermore, the sector’s strategic vision aims not only to provide high-speed connectivity but also aims to offer affordable connections through policies that reduce subscription costs, making this technology accessible to a larger segment of the population. At the same time, the increase in bandwidth has enabled a high-speed internet experience while revising and reducing costs.

Today, optical fiber networks offer remarkably high speeds in which users benefit from a smooth internet experience, without the latency associated with traditional cable technologies, enabling unhindered web browsing, instant downloads …etc

Optical fiber networks also create a strong foundation to accommodate future technologies, due to their agility and scalability. Its seamlessly integrate technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality (VR) and 5G into a optical fiber network, paving the way for an even more advanced digital era.

The ultimate goal anticipated by our sector is to provide fiber optic connectivity, not just as a luxury for a certain social class but a tangible reality for everyone, including all societal segments.
